Every year, thousands of workers are made ill by exposure to hazardous substances, contracting cancer, lung diseases such as asthma and skin diseases such as dermatitis. Many industrial and construction sites have the potential to expose their employees to harmful dust or vapours and gases. Inhalation is usually the most significant route of entry into the body and so monitoring the air they breathe is vitally important.
Protecting the Health of Employees
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) Regulation 7 places a duty on employers, as part of their COSHH assessment, to prevent or control the exposure of staff to hazardous substances in the workplace. Regulation 10 sets a duty to undertake workplace air monitoring to measure these workplace exposure levels (WELs).
Hazardous substances include:
- Substances used directly in work activities (e.g. adhesives, paints, cleaning agents, solvents)
- Substances generated during work activities (e.g. metal particulate fumes from soldering & welding)
- Naturally Occurring Substances (e.g. dusts, crystalline silica)
- Biological Agents (e.g. bacteria & moulds)

Air sampling or exposure assessment is often necessary to determine the nature of any controls that may be required and to make sure that the workplace exposure limit (WEL) for a given substance is not likely to be exceeded. We always check and advise clients on the compliance of Workplace Exposure Levels (WEL) published in EH40/2005.

All site obtained samples are processed through a laboratory for analysis and on completion the results are provided within a fully comprehensive written report. The results will highlight any exposure to hazardous substances and assess the effectiveness of existing control measures, such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems. The results are evaluated against known Workplace Exposure Limits and can be interpreted to determine any improvements and supplementary control measures. Implementing this advice will ensure employees are protected, which in most cases also improves production and increase staff morale.
